The Duluth Power and Control Wheel
The Duluth Power and Control Wheel demonstrates that Domestic Violence is more than just physical abuse, it is a network of behaviours that can be used as a method of control. The outer wheel (or the tyre) is the violence that most people associate with Domestic Violence such as physical or sexual violence and the spokes incorporate the other behaviours which may be more covert such as emotional abuse. When used together these types of abuse can become extremely powerful and destroy the victims self esteem to such an extent that they no longer feel able to leave the relationship.
